December 7, 1920 - May 23, 2009
Warren M. Tucker was born on December 7, 1920 to Phyllis Singleton Tucker and Warren F. Tucker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He had two younger siblings, a sister, Carol, and a much younger brother, Vincent. His mother had attended a teachers' college, and his father was a graduate of the Tuskegee Institute. There were no living grandparents, so little was known about the family origins.
Warren, whose nickname was Po, often recounted stories of a very happy youth spent with his parents, his siblings, the neighbors, and the family pets. He was born into the Episcopal faith with the family attending Holy Cross Episcopal Church. He spent several summers as a teenager working in the local steel mills, which he always credited with making him strong.
Upon graduation from Westinghouse High School, Warren attended Duquesne University, where he studied art and business for two years. In 1942, he was drafted into the Army Air Force and was stationed in Denver, Colorado at Lowry Air Force Base. It was in Denver that he met his bride-to-be, Sharon Duncan, and the couple married in July 1946 at Holy Redeemer Episcopal Church.
Warren and Sharon had two children, Linda and Warren, Jr. The family spent vacations visiting the family resort Lincoln Hills in the Colorado Rockies, taking camping trips, traveling to Pittsburgh and visiting many historical, scenic places. In 1963, Warren's employer, the Veteran's Administration, moved the family to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Warren learned to love the beautiful Twin Cities and was grateful for the opportunity to live in a new and different place.
In 1975, Warren, who had worked for 16 years as an accounting clerk, retired from the VA. He and Sharon sold their home and set out to be "winter Texans" for 14 years. They spent winters in Harlingen, Texas near the Mexican border and summers in Minnesota. During these years they made many friends from all over the U.S.., as they served as hosts at national camp grounds, learned Spanish and folk dancing, tutored Mexican children in English and attended every Episcopal Church they could find. In 2001 they officially moved to Maryland to be closer to their daughter, Linda, and her family, especially to their grandson, Alex.
On May 23, 2009, at the age of 88, Warren Tucker passed away at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. On February 16, 2007, Warren was predeceased by his beloved son, Warren Jr., at the age of 59. On June 6, 2009, Warren Tucker's dear sister, Carol T. Walker, passed away at George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C at the age of 86.
